EV charger installation cost by state, 2026 data
I am Romain, founder of CheckedHomePros. Level 2 EV charger installs are one of the fastest-growing line items in our routed quote volume. This page is the 50-state plus DC dataset I would have wanted as a homeowner: median installed cost, typical permit fee, live utility rebate amount, and the sub-panel constraint that drives 80% of cost variance. Triangulated from the DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center, NEC 625 install standards, every state's published utility rebate program, and the 850 quotes our network routed across 2024 to 2025.
Methodology
Three data sources. First, the 850 routed quote requests our directory processed for Level 2 chargers in our 9 active metros (Phoenix, Tampa, Austin, Denver, Las Vegas, Charlotte, Nashville, Raleigh, Atlanta) where we have direct contractor pricing telemetry. Second, the DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center utility rebate database, which publishes every active state and utility program with the dollar amount. Third, NEC 625 (the National Electrical Code section covering EV charging equipment) for sub-panel and ampacity requirements that drive permit fees and labor.
Outliers above the 95th percentile and below the 5th percentile were trimmed. Numbers rounded to the nearest $50 to avoid fake precision. Rebate amounts reflect the program state as of 2026 Q1 publication; some programs are first-come, first-served and run out mid-year. Always check the utility portal before factoring the rebate into the budget. The dataset refreshes annually.
State-by-state table
Median total installed cost is for a 40A or 50A hardwired Level 2 charger, dedicated 240V circuit, within 30 feet of the main panel, with no trenching. Permit fee reflects the typical residential electrical permit for that state's most populous metro. Utility rebate is the best published residential program for the state's largest IOU. Sub-panel column flags states where modern code or panel-load math typically forces a 200A service upgrade.

National median and IRA 25C / 30C tax credit
The national median total installed Level 2 EV charger cost in 2026 is $1,180. The IRA 30C federal tax credit (Section 30C, Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit) covers 30% of installation cost up to $1,000 for residential installations. Eligibility is geographic: the install must be in either a low or moderate income census tract, or a non-urban census tract. Roughly 65% of US census tracts qualify. The IRS publishes the 30C eligibility map (search "IRS 30C eligible census tract") and you can look up any address before filing.
Top cost drivers
- Distance from main panel to charger location. Every additional 30 feet of run adds $200 to $400 in wire, conduit, and labor. Garage-attached panels inside a 15-foot run is the cheapest scenario.
- Circuit ampacity. A 50A circuit (for a 40A charger pulling 9.6 kW) runs $50 to $150 more than a 40A circuit. A 60A circuit for a 48A Tesla Wall Connector pushes the cost higher because the breaker, wire gauge (6 AWG copper or 4 AWG aluminum), and conduit fill all step up.
- Sub-panel required versus direct breaker. If the main panel is full or lacks the spare 240V slot, a sub-panel addition runs $800 to $1,500. If a full service upgrade to 200A is required, add $2,800 to $4,500.
- Permit fee variance by jurisdiction. $75 in rural Alabama, $250 in New York City. Permit-required states require an inspection visit after install, which adds $50 to $150 in contractor coordination labor.
- Hardwire versus NEMA 14-50 outlet. NEMA 14-50 saves $100 to $200 in labor but limits the charger to 40A and most warranties require hardwire above 40A.
- Trenching or conduit through finished walls. Outdoor or detached garage installs requiring trenching add $400 to $1,200. Fishing wire through finished walls adds $200 to $500.
How to use this data
Compare any contractor quote against your state's median plus the permit fee. If the quote is above the state median by more than 30%, ask the contractor to itemize which cost driver is responsible: distance from panel, sub-panel addition, service upgrade, or trenching. A reasonable quote should explain the delta in one of those four categories. If the contractor cannot itemize, get a second quote.
Cost by EV charger model
Hardware cost is roughly 35 to 55% of the total installed price. The five models below cover 80% of residential installs in 2026. Most utility rebates accept any UL-listed Level 2 charger; some require Energy Star certification (ChargePoint, Wallbox, JuiceBox, and Tesla all carry it).

Annual refresh. Next scheduled update: 2027 Q1, when DOE AFDC publishes the previous year's rebate program closeouts and our routed quote volume covers the 2026 full year. Interim corrections (rebate program closures, IRA 30C cap changes) get logged inline with the change date.
